At the ICTF, mastering the yard rules is the only way to survive. You must have your digital mission pre-built in the UPGo mobile app before you even approach the gate.

Union Pacific Intermodal Container Approach & The Gate: Carson City Traps & Militant PPE
Hitting the physical gate means taking the Terminal Island Freeway (CA-103) north until it literally dead-ends directly into the facility's security apparatus.
- The Routing Mandate: You are hemmed in by the cities of Carson and Long Beach. Do not attempt to shortcut through residential streets to beat the notorious I-710 or I-405 traffic. Carson PD heavily enforces a 6,000-lb weight limit on non-designated roads. Stick strictly to CA-103, Alameda Street, and Sepulveda Blvd.
- Militant PPE Rules (CRITICAL): UP ICTF has some of the strictest, most specific safety rules in the country. No green or yellow safety vests are allowed. You must wear an ANSI Class II/III Orange reflectorized vest so you aren't confused with yard signals. Furthermore, your work boots must have a "defined heel" (at least 1/2 inch) to prevent slipping on chassis ladders. Show up in flat-soled boots or a green vest, and you will be denied entry.

Once past the OCR cameras, you are in a massive wheeled facility controlled entirely by the OASIS digital inventory system.
- The Pool of Pools: ICTF draws from the massive LA/LB "Pool of Pools" (DCLI, TRAC). Because it is a designated Start/Stop location, you can terminate chassis rentals here. However, finding a "good order" chassis without flat spots or expired DOT stickers is a daily battle.
- Hostlers and Live Lifts: The terminal's hostlers track every container movement via GPS. If you use UPGo, a clean drop-and-hook can take under 45 minutes. But if you have to wait for a rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane for a "Live Lift" or dig a box out of a grounded stack, your turn time will explode. To maximize fluidity, aim for the 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM "early bird" window to avoid shift changes and freeway gridlock.
Union Pacific Intermodal Container Driver Survival Guide: The Parking Desert & CHP Scales
The ICTF is an industrial machine designed for freight velocity. Aside from porta-johns in the yard, there are zero driver amenities.
- Zero Overnight Parking: Do not park on the shoulders of Sepulveda Blvd or CA-103. Port Police and local PD aggressively patrol these zones to keep emergency lanes clear; you will be ticketed and towed immediately.
- Safe Harbors: If you need a reset, head south to the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Hit the Harbor Truck Stop (2130 W PCH) for fuel, food, and restrooms. If you need secure trailer staging, book a spot at the Truck Parking Club on E 32nd St.
- The Scale Threat: Watch your axle weights. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Port Police frequently run mobile scale houses right outside the gate to catch heavy boxes leaving the rail ramp. Ensure your load is balanced and your chassis is road-legal before you hit the outgate.
