Norfolk Southern Huntsville Intermodal: A Guide for Drivers

The Norfolk Southern (NS) Huntsville Intermodal Terminal is a big inland train port in Alabama. It connects trains, airplanes, and trucks all in one clean place.

Even though it is less crowded than big ocean ports, you still need to follow strict rules. If you miss a deadline or make a wrong turn, you can get stuck for hours and lose money.

The most important rule happens before you even start driving. Do not type "401 Whitesport Drive SW" into your GPS. Many old maps list this as the truck yard, but it is a major trap!

Whitesport Drive is actually a crowded medical area full of doctor offices and hospitals. If you take a giant 53-foot truck there, you will get stuck in a tight parking lot, waste your driving hours, and miss your train.

The real truck gate is miles away at the Jetplex Industrial Park.

Getting Into the Yard

To get to the yard safely, take Exit 9 off Interstate 565 and head south on Wall Triana Highway. This road is built extra strong for heavy trucks and keeps you away from busy neighborhood traffic.

  • Use the App: Drivers must use an app called ExpressNS+ on their phones. This app lets you skip the long lines at the gate shack. You type in your info ahead of time, scan a QR code at the gate, and get a digital receipt.
  • Don't Get Locked Out: Be very careful when typing your password into the app. If you mess up three times, the app will lock you out, and you will face long delays.

Inside the Train Yard

Once you pass the 10-lane gate, you are inside a very clean and organized yard. It has enough paved parking spaces for over 1,100 truck trailers. Big 45-ton cranes roll over the tracks to lift containers on and off your truck.

Huntsville has its own pile of extra trailer frames (called a chassis pool). This is great because you won't run out of equipment, but using them costs extra money.

If you leave a container sitting in the yard for too long after your 10 free days are up, the railroad will charge you a penalty fee of $20.00 to $25.00 for every single day it sits there.

Truck Driver Survival Tips

The train yard closes at 6:00 PM and does not allow trucks to park overnight inside the gates. If you arrive late, you need a safe place to sleep.

  • Where to Park: The best spot close by is the Pilot Travel Center at 8995 Madison Blvd (Exit 8 off I-565). It has truck parking, fuel lanes, scales to weigh your truck, and hot showers.
  • Watch the Weather: Alabama summers get incredibly hot, often climbing past 100°F on the black asphalt. Make sure your truck's air conditioner works perfectly. Also, keep an eye on the weather report, this area gets sudden, severe thunderstorms and dangerous winds that will force the big yard cranes to stop working immediately.

Let Us Handle the Stress

Running a truck through the Huntsville train port takes perfect timing. If your dispatch team doesn't watch the strict 4:00 PM train deadline or gets your driver lost in the medical center trap, your company will lose money fast.
