BNSF Cicero Intermodal Facility (J791)
If you are pulling freight in the Chicago market, you are going to end up at the BNSF Cicero yard. Situated right in the dense, heavy-industrial grid of the Windy City, this 24/7 terminal is a high-velocity transcontinental meatgrinder.

Between the strict split-gate system, the ancient low-clearance viaducts, and the aggressive local municipal cops waiting to write tickets on residential streets, Cicero will absolutely eat your HOS clock if you don’t approach it with a bulletproof plan.
Here is the raw operational intel you need to get in, get loaded, and get out.
BNSF Cicero Administrative and Operational Parameters
Before you even bump the gate at Cicero, your administrative house needs to be perfectly in order. This terminal runs a relentless 24/7 cycle, meaning strict yard rules apply around the clock, security doesn't care if it's noon or 3 AM.
To survive the high-speed processing here, you cannot rely on the manual lanes. You have to match your FIRM codes, know your exact free time limits, and have your Rail Pass fully loaded before you put the truck in gear. Use the operational breakdown below as your quick-reference dispatch cheat sheet.

BNSF Cicero Approach & The Gate
The town of Cicero has zero tolerance for commercial trucks on residential streets. If you touch Austin Boulevard or Laramie Avenue outside of the designated terminal zones, you will be heavily fined. Stick to I-55 to IL-50 (Cicero Ave) North for the Ceco gate, or I-290 for the Ogden gate.
Cicero operates on a strict split-gate system, and internal access between the Ceco and Ogden sides is notoriously restricted. Do not bank on cutting across the yard inside the wire. If you enter the wrong gate for your destination, you will likely be forced to exit, navigate heavy city traffic, and re-enter the facility, completely killing your turn time.
- Ceco Gate (26th St): Dedicated exclusively to St. Paul, MN freight. Closed to bare chassis returns.
- Ogden Gate (Ogden Ave): Dedicated to West Coast freight (Denver, Portland, Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma). Open for bare chassis returns.
Pro-Tip: Do not touch the kiosk. Use the BNSF RailPASS app before you arrive to input your IDs and get your digital QR code. This lets you bypass the manual lines and use express Lanes 1-3.
Inside the BNSF Cicero
BNSF Cicero is a dense hybrid yard handling both grounded containers and wheeled trailer parking. It is a high-traffic environment with heavy lift equipment operating around the clock.
- Speed Limit: Strictly enforced at 15–20 mph. Wide-span cranes and hostlers always have the right of way. No stopping in the alleys.
- Finding Your Box: Use the Display Intermodal Lot Location (DLL) tool on your RailPASS app. It gives you the exact lot, row, and spot number so you aren't burning fuel wandering the grid.
BNSF Cicero Driver Survival Guide
This yard is strictly governed by the BNSF "Circle of Safety." If you step out of your cab, you must be compliant, or you will be escorted out.
- Mandatory PPE: ANSI hard hat, Class 2/3 reflective vest, and steel/composite-toed boots.
- The Cell Phone Ban: BNSF strictly prohibits looking at a cell phone, tablet, or electronic device within 25 feet of the tracks or while driving.
- The Chicago Bridge Trap: The immediate area is surrounded by ancient, low-clearance viaducts. Watch out for the Roosevelt Road viaducts (some drop to 13'7") and the 95th Street viaduct (13'0"). Know your exact height.
- Parking & Reset: There is zero long-term parking inside the gate. If you need a reset, there is a paid, secure staging lot less than a mile from the Ceco Gate at 4622 W 26th St (approx. $55/day). The closest major truck stop is two miles south at 3738 S. Cicero Avenue.
Let Us Dispatch Your Chicago Runs
Running the BNSF Cicero yard requires serious regional expertise. If you don't know the live gate-destination logic, or if you waste two hours deadheading for a bare chassis because you didn't check the DCLI/COCP neutral pool inventory, your profit margin for the day is gone.

Our dispatch team runs Cicero every single day. We handle the RailPASS pre-arrivals, navigate the bridge closures, and track the chassis pools so you can do what you do best: drive.
